Class: Progestin (Synthetic form of the hormone progesterone)
Mechanism of Action:
Hormonal Regulation: Progesterone is a natural hormone involved in the regulation of the menstrual cycle and pregnancy. It helps prepare the uterine lining for implantation of a fertilized egg and maintains the early stages of pregnancy.
Extended Release (SR): The SR (sustained release) formulation allows for a gradual release of the hormone over time, providing a more stable level of progesterone in the bloodstream.
Uses:
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): Used in combination with estrogen in HRT to treat menopausal symptoms and prevent endometrial hyperplasia (a condition where the lining of the uterus becomes too thick).
Menstrual Irregularities: Helps regulate menstrual cycles and address issues like irregular or heavy periods.
Support in Early Pregnancy: Used to support the luteal phase in cases of luteal phase deficiency or to prevent miscarriage in certain high-risk pregnancies.
Endometriosis: May be used to manage symptoms of endometriosis by reducing the growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterus.
Precautions:
Medical History: Use with caution in individuals with a history of blood clots, breast cancer, liver disease, or cardiovascular conditions.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Should be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider during pregnancy and breastfeeding, especially when used for hormonal support in pregnancy.
Interactions: Progesterone can interact with other medications, including certain anti-seizure drugs and antibiotics. Discuss all medications with your healthcare provider.
